Things to Consider When Choosing a Health Insurance Plan

Dec 12, 2025

Learn what Open Enrollment is who it applies to why it matters and how to choose a health plan that fits your budget. Includes a checklist plus next steps if you miss the deadline.

Choosing a health insurance plan is about more than price. The right plan balances monthly cost access to care and protection from unexpected medical bills.

Choosing a health insurance plan is about more than finding the lowest price. The right plan matches your health needs budget and lifestyle. These are the key factors to consider before you enroll.

Your doctors and providers

If you want to keep your current doctors start there. Confirm they are in network and verify directly with the provider office.

If you do not have a preferred doctor consider how broad the network is and whether it gives you flexibility.

Monthly premium versus out of pocket costs

Plans balance monthly cost against what you pay when you need care.

Lower premiums usually mean higher deductibles
Higher premiums usually mean lower costs when you use care

Think about how often you expect to use healthcare over the next year.

Deductible and out of pocket maximum

The deductible is what you pay before the plan starts sharing many costs.
The out of pocket maximum is the most you will pay in a year for covered in network services.

If you want predictability focus on a lower out of pocket maximum.

Prescription coverage

Even if you are healthy now check prescription coverage.

Plans differ on
Covered medications
Drug tiers
Pharmacy networks

This matters more than most people expect.

Plan type and flexibility

Different plans come with different rules.

Some require referrals
Some limit out of network care
Some offer more flexibility but cost more

Choose the structure that matches how you already use healthcare.

Your budget comfort level

The cheapest plan is not always the best plan. Ask yourself
Can I afford the deductible if something happens
Am I comfortable with surprise bills
Do I want stable predictable costs

Closing

A good plan feels boring once you enroll. That usually means you chose well. If you understand how it works and it fits your life you are on the right track. Compare plans at Open Enrollment Health

Affordable Care Act

Affordable Care Act (ACA) is an extensive healthcare reform sometimes referred to as Obamacare. As per ACA, individual medical insurance plans must cover ten Essential Health Benefits in order to be recognized as a Qualified Health Plan (QHP)and provide “minimum essential coverage (MEC)” to enrollees. To find more information on QHP options in your state, visit www.HealthCare.gov .Premium tax credits are subject to eligibility requirements.

Short Term Medical (STM)

Comprehensive medical coverage is not provided by STM Insurance plans. STM doesn’t fall under the minimum essential coverage as defined by the ACA and may not cover all Essential Health Benefits. Plans typically don’t cover preexisting conditions and may have financial limitations on health benefits.

Fixed Indemnity/Limited Indemnity Plans

Indemnity Plans are complementary to health insurance plans, not a replacement for insurance or a substitute for the minimum essential coverage required by the ACA. If you are eligible for Medicaid, check if these payments affect your coverage and eligibility.
