Frequently asked questions

Answers for individual and family plans, including short-term medical.

How do I choose a short-term medical plan? Compare the term, the deductible, and the benefit maximum. It is for a temporary gap, not for a condition you already have.

Is short-term medical the same as an ACA plan? No. It is not minimum essential coverage, and you cannot use a Marketplace subsidy to buy it.

How is the price set? ZIP code, age, term, deductible, and benefit maximum. Household income does not lower the premium.

Where is it available? Availability depends on your ZIP code and state rules. Some states limit how long a short-term plan can stay in force.

When can I enroll? You can usually apply any day of the year. Acceptance can still depend on health questions.

Are my doctors and prescriptions covered? Ask before you enroll. Many short-term plans cover only a limited prescription benefit, or none. Care outside the plan is paid by you.

Who should not buy a short-term plan? Anyone who needs an ACA Marketplace plan, or who is eligible for Medicare.

Open Enrollment Health is a licensed insurance agency. Figures on this page are the listed starting price, range, and term. They are not a quote, and a plan may not be available in every ZIP code.
